Installing a decorative or commercial lamp post looks simple, but a long-lasting pole depends on the foundation, wiring, and earthing being done right. This guide walks through the process our engineers at Vijay Tech follow on projects across South India — from site survey to final commissioning.
Before ordering the pole, confirm three things: height and luminaire weight, wind zone (as per IS 875 Part 3), and soil bearing capacity. A 6m decorative cast-iron pole in a coastal wind zone needs a very different foundation than the same pole inland.
Also decide the lux level and spacing. As a rule of thumb, area lighting poles are spaced at 3–4× the mounting height; street lighting at 2.5–3×.
Use the manufacturer's foundation drawing. For most 4–6m decorative poles a pit of 600 × 600 × 900 mm is enough; taller commercial poles (8–12m) usually need 900 × 900 × 1500 mm or a designed pedestal.
Keep the pit square and the sides vertical — sloped sides reduce uplift resistance.
The foundation template ties the anchor bolts to the exact bolt pattern of the pole's base plate. Level the template on packing plates, align it to the road or facade, and brace it so it can't shift when concrete is poured.
Leave 50–75 mm of thread exposed above the finished concrete level for the base plate, washers, and locking nuts.
Use M25 grade concrete minimum. Vibrate as you pour to avoid honeycombing around the bolts. Cure for at least 7 days before mounting the pole — 14 days for taller poles. Skipping cure time is the single most common cause of poles leaning within a year.
A PVC conduit is cast into the foundation running from the feeder pillar or the previous pole's junction box. Pull armoured underground cable (typically 2.5–4 sqmm for LED, 4–6 sqmm for HID) and leave at least 1.5 m of slack coiled inside the pole for termination.
Lift the pole with a crane or tripod hoist — never with slings around the shaft on decorative poles, as this damages the finish. Lower onto the bolts, plumb with a spirit level in two planes, and torque the nuts in a star pattern to the value on the pole datasheet.
Once torqued, grout the gap under the base plate with non-shrink grout to distribute the load evenly.
Terminate the incoming cable in the pole's junction box, then run flexible cable up to the luminaire. Every pole must be bonded to a dedicated earth electrode with a resistance of ≤5Ω — this is not optional for public installations and it is what protects passers-by if a fault develops.
Before energising: megger the cable insulation, check continuity of the earth, and verify polarity at every pole. After energising, confirm the photocell, timer, or DALI driver behaves as specified.
Hand over the megger and earth-resistance readings along with the as-built drawings — most municipal and industrial clients need these on record.
